Bear Elite Hybrid YouTube Review

About Bear

Established in 2014, Bear is a family-owned and operated mattress and bedding brand. Their mattress lineup includes the Bear Original, Bear Pro, Bear Hybrid, and most recently, the Bear Elite Hybrid, a luxurious, hotel-style mattress with a more traditional feel.

Bear mattresses offer sleepers a myriad of features and benefits, but it’s Bear’s Sleep Recovery Technology that sets them apart from the competition. Designed to “boost energy, recovery, and wellbeing,” each Bear mattress is constructed with Celliant, a blend of natural minerals that help improve blood flow, circulation, and tissue oxygenation.

Mattress Construction

The Bear Elite Hybrid is a luxury 5-layer mattress made from foam and coils.

  • Mattress cover – Celliant fibers and phase change material (PCM) are woven into the hand-quilted cover, providing cooling and recovery benefits.
  • Comfort Layer – The Bear Elite Hybrid is made with copper-infused memory foam, designed to promote cooling, and zoned and cut foam for enhanced breathability and an optimal balance of support and pressure relief.
  • Support Layer – This layer is made with individually pocketed coils which provide excellent support while minimizing motion transfer. The coils sit atop a layer of high-density polyfoam, lending additional support and durability.

Firmness & Feel

The Bear Elite Hybrid is available in 3 comfort options: luxury plush, luxury firm, and extra firm. We reviewed the luxury plush and felt it was a tad firmer than listed on Bear’s website. We rated it a six out of ten for firmness. It’s important to remember that firmness is subjective, and everybody will experience firmness differently depending on body type and sleep position. Generally, the less you weigh, the firmer the bed will feel and vice versa.

Firmness is just one aspect of choosing a new mattress. How a mattress feels is equally important to consider. With comfort layers made from memory foam, the Bear Elite has the typical sink-in pressure relief seen with most memory foam beds. However, the pocketed coils just beneath the comfort layers provide a quicker response, ensuring sleepers don’t experience a bogged down, stuck-in-the-mud feeling.

Sleeping Positions

Many factors influence your perception of firmness and comfort when choosing a mattress. Two of the most significant aspects you should consider are your sleeping position and your body weight. Your sleeping position says a lot about the problems you might encounter when choosing a mattress. At the same time, your weight can indicate how you’re likely to perceive mattress firmness.

Side Sleepers

Side sleeping places a lot of pressure on the hips and shoulders. As such, side sleepers should shop for beds that offer excellent pressure relief while providing adequate support through the lumbar.

The Bear Elite Hybrid is designed with zoned support, targeting stubborn pressure points and promoting a healthy spine. As a result, the Bear Elite Hybrid could be a good fit for side sleepers of all weight ranges.

Average and lightweight side sleepers should really enjoy the luxury plush version of the Bear Elite. Heavier side sleepers need additional support to keep their body properly aligned, preventing pain over time. Side sleepers weighing more than 230 lbs may want to consider the luxury firm option.

Back Sleepers

Back sleepers should shop for a mattress that provides good support with moderate cushioning. Mattresses without proper support can cause the low back to sink into the bed, causing lower back pain.

Zoned foam construction provides a nice balance between pressure relief and support. Back sleepers should experience nice contouring around the hips while maintaining a supportive, healthy spine.

Lightweight back sleepers (less than 130 lbs.) should find the luxury plush model to be an ideal fit. In contrast, heavier sleepers will likely find the luxury firm option a better fit. Average-weight sleepers (130 to 230 lbs) could find comfort in either option, depending on your firmness preference.

Stomach Sleepers

Choosing a firm mattress with little to no contouring is ideal for stomach sleepers. Without proper support through the midsection, stomach sleepers may find their hips sinking into the bed, pulling the spine out of alignment. Over time, this can place undue stress on the lower back, resulting in chronic pain.

We do not recommend the luxury plush for strict stomach sleepers, regardless of body weight. Instead, we’d recommend the extra firm option for stomach sleepers.

Bear Elite Hybrid Mattress Performance

Temperature-Regulation

The Bear Elite Hybrid includes many features designed to promote cooling for a better night’s sleep. Celliant fibers, phase-change material, and copper-infused memory foam absorb heat while promoting cooler sleep.

Next up, a layer of zoned foam with cutouts provides channels for airflow, allowing heat to dissipate away from the mattress. Pocketed coils further improve breathability and prevent the mattresses from storing trapped heat.

Overall, we felt the Bear Elite Hybrid did a good job of thermoregulation. While it wasn’t the coolest mattress we’ve reviewed, it did  provide us with a temperature-neutral sleep experience.

Motion Isolation

For couples sharing a bed, minimal motion transfer is crucial. Hybrid mattresses display more motion transfer than all-foam mattresses, which can mean more sleep disturbances for you or your partner throughout the night.

The Bear Elite Hybrid, however, performed better than most hybrids! While all-foam mattresses are hands down the best for isolating motion, the memory foam comfort layer of the Elite Hybrid did a good job dampening movement and minimizing sleep disturbances.

Edge Support

Like motion isolation, edge support is another critical metric for couples. Good edge support allows sleepers to utilize the entire surface area of the bed without feeling like they will roll off the edge. Mattresses with good edge support feel larger and more secure for couples sharing a smaller bed, such as a full or queen-size bed.

Edge-to-edge coils run along the perimeter of the Bear Elite Hybrid mattress. However, we felt the edge support was average. We’ve experienced better edge support in other hybrid mattresses, which is likely attributable to the soft comfort layers that make up the luxury plush option.

Ease Of Movement

Ease of movement is an essential consideration for combination sleepers.  Plush contouring, while great for pressure relief and comfort, can make transitioning from one sleep position to another more difficult.

While the Bear Elite Hybrid does offer nice cushioning and contouring, we found it fairly easy to move around on. The coil support system quickly responds to pressure and minimizes sluggishness, allowing us to change positions easily.

Bear Elite Hybrid vs Bear Pro

The Bear Pro is an all-foam mattress that offers a balanced feel which could be suitable for all sleep positions. It is, however, only available in one comfort option –medium-firm. Mattresses in this firmness range are recognized for their universal comfort for the majority of sleepers. That being said, the Bear Elite hybrid comes in a range of firmness options giving sleepers a more tailored sleep experience.

The Bear Pro and the Bear Elite Hybrid both feature Celliant which can improve sleep, boost recovery, and enhance performance. As such, the Bear mattresses are an excellent option for athletes and active individuals.

The Bear Pro is a clear winner for budget shoppers as it is priced at almost half the cost of the Bear Elite Hybrid. However, the Bear Elite Hybrid offers improved cooling features and zoned support. Ultimately, the Bear Elite Hybrid is a luxury mattress and the price tag reflects this.
