Winkbeds is a family-owned bed-in-a-box business based out of Watertown, Wisconsin. Founded in 2014, Winkbed blends the best of both worlds, combining foam and coils in its luxury hybrid mattress. The Winkbed is available in 4 different firmness options: Softer, Luxury Firm, Firmer and Plus (for heavier people). We had the pleasure of reviewing the softer model in today’s Winkbeds Mattress Review.
WinkBeds Firmness & Feel
Upon our initial encounter with the WinkBeds mattress, we were struck by its softness, which we rated a 5 out of 10 on the firmness scale. Imagine sinking into a fluffy, down-filled pillow with the added benefit of a sturdy, supportive foundation beneath it. That’s precisely the sensation you get with the WinkBeds mattress.
As you climb into the bed, you’re greeted with a plush softness that gently cradles your body. It’s almost as if you’re floating on a cloud. However, as you settle in, you’ll quickly notice the supportive coil system beneath the surface that offers just the right amount of pushback to keep your spine properly aligned. The result is an incredibly comfortable sleeping experience that provides the necessary support to prevent waking up with aches and pains. The WinkBed truly delivers the best of both worlds, making it an excellent option for those seeking a balance of comfort and support in their sleep surface.
To provide a more comprehensive evaluation, we will break down the performance of the WinkBed Hybrid Mattress based on sleep position and weight. For reference, lightweight sleepers weigh less than 130 lbs, average-weight sleepers weigh between 130-230 lbs, and heavy sleepers weigh more than 230 lbs.
Side Sleepers
The Softer WinkBed is an excellent choice for side sleepers looking for cushioning and pressure relief. The foam comfort layers in the WinkBed allow sleepers to sink into the mattress and provide targeted support to the hips and shoulders, which are common pressure points for side sleepers. This ensures that the spine stays in proper alignment, reducing the risk of back pain.
The Softer WinkBed is especially ideal for average and lightweight side sleepers, who may find that the plush feel of the mattress provides the right amount of cushioning. However, heavy side sleepers may want to consider a firmer option to ensure optimal alignment and support.
Back Sleepers
The WinkBed Hybrid Mattress is a versatile mattress that offers targeted support through its zoned design. While the Softer WinkBed is ideal for strict side sleepers, the zoned support system provides additional support to the lower back, which could work well for average and lightweight back sleepers who prefer a soft mattress feel. However, we recommend the Luxury Firm option for most back sleepers. On the other hand, heavy back sleepers may want to consider the Luxury Firm or the Firm option for optimal support and alignment.
Stomach Sleepers
I would not recommend the Softer WinkBed for stomach sleepers. This mattress offers a plush feel with ample cushioning and pressure relief, best suited to side sleeping, not stomach sleeping.
Stomach sleepers need a mattress with firmer support to maintain proper alignment and prevent midsection sagging, which can cause lower back pain. The Luxury Firm option of the WinkBed may work well for lightweight stomach sleepers. In contrast, average-weight stomach sleepers may prefer the firmer feel of the Firmer WinkBed. For heavy stomach sleepers weighing over 300 lbs, the WinkBed Plus, specifically designed to provide extra support and durability, could offer the best comfort and alignment.
WinkBeds Mattress Performance
Cooling
The WinkBed Hybrid Mattress is an excellent cooling mattress for hot sleepers! The WinkBed Hybrid Mattress is designed with Triple Layer Heat Disperse™ Technology, a combination of three different layers that work together to keep you cool and comfortable while you sleep.
The mattress’s top layer is a eucalyptus-derived Tencel cover that wicks moisture away from your body, which helps keep you dry throughout the night. Next, a gel-infused euro-pillow top helps prevent heat buildup. Lastly, a layer of pocketed coils allows for optimal airflow, further enhancing the mattress’s cooling properties. Overall, the WinkBed Hybrid Mattress is an excellent choice for anyone who wants a comfortable and cool sleep experience.
Motion Isolation
The WinkBed does an impressive job of isolating motion, especially compared to other hybrid mattresses. While hybrids are generally not known for their motion isolation capabilities, the WinkBed stands out due to its thick layers of foam in the euro-pillow top. These foam layers help absorb any movements made on the mattress and prevent them from being felt by your partner. So, if you’re sharing the bed with a partner or a pet, you’re less likely to feel any tossing and turning throughout the night.
Edge Support
Despite the softness of the WinkBed (soft) model, I was pleasantly surprised by the level of support it provided around the edges. This is thanks to the Extra-Edge Anti-Sag Support system that WinkBed has integrated into the mattress. This system provides firmer support around the perimeter of the mattress, helping to prevent sagging and allowing for a more stable edge. This is a great feature for couples who may need to utilize the full surface area of the mattress or for those who like to sit on the edge of the bed.
Ease of Movement
The Softer WinkBeds is designed with thick layers of foam, which allow sleepers to sink into the mattress, giving them a feeling of sleeping “in” rather than “on” the mattress. However, this can also mean sleepers may experience mild resistance when changing positions.
Despite this, the Softer option offers decent ease of movement due to the responsive coils that provide pushback, preventing sleepers from feeling stuck in the mattress. However, one of the firmer WinkBed options may be a better fit for sleepers who prioritize ease of movement.
Off-Gassing
Off-gassing is a common phenomenon that occurs when unboxing a new mattress. It refers to the releasing of a temporary chemical odor caused by the breakdown of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) trapped within the materials used to construct the mattress. This odor can be unpleasant, but it is harmless and should dissipate within a few days.
The WinkBed Hybrid Mattress is made with CertiPUR-US certified foams, meaning they are made without harmful chemicals such as formaldehyde, heavy metals, and phthalates. This certification ensures that the foam used in the mattress is safe for you and the environment. Additionally, the hybrid design of the WinkBed allows for optimal airflow, which facilitates faster off-gassing compared to all-foam mattresses. So, while some off-gassing may be present during the unboxing of your new WinkBed, it should dissipate relatively quickly, leaving you with a comfortable and safe sleeping surface.

Sleep Trial
WinkBeds offers a generous 120-night sleep trial with easy returns or exchanges and no restocking fees. They request you keep the mattress for at least 30 days before initiating a return or exchange, which is standard practice. Exchanges cost $49 and include white-glove delivery, removal of the old mattress, and a new 60-day sleep trial.
Warranty
WinkBeds offers a Lifetime warranty and Lifetime Comfort guarantee. If there are any issues with workmanship or materials, WinkBeds will replace your mattress for free. Once your trial ends, if your needs change, you can change the firmness level or replace your mattress for 50% off the current price.

Flipping Your Mattress
Winkbeds should never be flipped. However, they recommend rotating the mattress every 2 weeks for the first 3 months. After that, they recommend rotating once every 2 months. Due to its bulk and weight, this seems a bit onerous. A queen mattress weighs 135 lbs making it a bit difficult to maneuver as it has no handles.
