Did you know that over 80% of people will experience back pain at some point in their lives? According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), this common issue affects the majority of adults at some stage. The right mattress can make all the difference in preventing and alleviating back pain. That’s where the Back Science Series 2 mattress comes in. Designed with firm support and plush comfort, it aims to relieve pressure points and promote proper spinal alignment.

In this review, we’ll share our firsthand experience with the Back Science Series 2. We’ll explore its construction, feel, and overall suitability for various sleepers, and show you how the right mattress can significantly impact your health and well-being.

Firmness & Feel of the Back Science Mattress

We noticed its firm feel from the moment we laid down on the Back Science Series 2. We rated it a 7.5 out of 10, with 10 being the firmest. While the base provides solid support, the top comfort layers add a touch of plushness that offers just the right amount of pressure relief. This balance creates a sensation that makes the mattress feel softer than its firm support base suggests.

The combination of the Flex-Comfort, PostureFlex, and HD-Flex foams offers a perfect balance of pressure relief and support. The top layers provide a plush, contouring feel that alleviates pressure points, especially around the hips and shoulders. Meanwhile, the zoned support system, including Lumbar-Flex™ zoning, ensures proper spinal alignment, which is crucial for back pain sufferers. We found that the mattress’s firm support, complemented by the adaptive comfort layers, provided an even distribution of body weight, reducing the risk of pressure buildup and enhancing overall comfort.

Best Sleep Positions

The mattress is marketed as suitable for all sleep positions, which we found accurate. We experienced the most comfort while sleeping on our backs and stomachs, with ample cushioning around the hips and lower back to prevent pressure buildup. While side sleeping was also comfortable, the mattress might be a bit too firm for those who prefer a softer feel. The Series 3 could be a better option for side sleepers seeking more plushness, as it is specifically designed with side sleepers in mind.

Our Back Science Sleeping Experience

Cooling

The Back Science Series 2 mattress has advanced cooling technology, including gel-infused foams, Phase Change Material, and an Airflow Transfer System. This system incorporates pinholes and channels between foam layers to promote airflow and breathability, allowing for effective heat dissipation.

However, as hot sleepers, Mike and I found that the mattress still sleeps a bit warm. Despite the impressive cooling features, those who tend to overheat at night might need additional strategies to stay cool. For practical tips and solutions, check out our guide on how to stay cool at night, which offers several cooling strategies to enhance your sleep environment.

Check out the details of our cooling test below:

Motion Isolation

Despite being a hybrid mattress with 6″ of individually wrapped coils, the Series 2 offers excellent motion isolation. This feature is particularly beneficial for couples, as it minimizes disturbances from each other’s movements. We found that the mattress absorbed motion well even with frequent position changes, ensuring we didn’t wake each other up throughout the night.

Edge Support

The reinforced foam encasement provides outstanding edge support, which is crucial for those who share their bed or prefer sleeping near the edge. The firm foam perimeter helps prevent sagging commonly associated with thick foam comfort layers, maintaining the mattress’s structure and stability. This makes getting in and out of bed easier and provides a sense of security when sitting on the edge.

Ease of Movement

The responsive foams in the Back Science Series 2 contribute to an effortless sleep experience. The mattress quickly returns to shape, allowing for easy movement and position changes without feeling stuck. This responsive nature is particularly beneficial for combination sleepers who frequently switch positions during the night.
