Puffy vs Purple Mattress Construction

Comparing Puffy to Purple may be a bit like comparing apples to oranges, but as different as these two mattress brands may be, understanding which mattress tailors to your needs is the goal. So let’s get started with construction.

Puffy Lux Mattress Construction

Touted for its “cloud-like” feel, the Puffy Lux stands at a height of 12” and features 4 layers of foam. The mattress cover is removable for machine washing and stain-resistant to boot!

The top comfort layer is 3” of Cooling Cloud™ foam designed to melt away pressure points while enhancing airflow, for a cooler, more breathable sleep experience. This is followed by another 1.5” comfort layer of Dual Cloud foam which further enhances the contouring and pressure-relieving benefits of the Lux.

The transition layer is 3” of ClimateComfort foam which increases responsiveness as well as helping to regulate temperature and resist humidity. And lastly, 6” of supportive foam make up the base which provides Puffy with exceptional support and long-term durability.

Puffy Royal Mattress Construction

If you really want to go all out for your sleep experience the Puffy Royal is Puffy’s top of the line luxury mattress. At 14” in height it builds upon the comfort of the Lux with some unique upgrades exclusive to the Royal.

The top layer is 1.5” of gel-infused cooling foam designed specifically to reduce heat and wick away moisture. Followed by a 2” foam layer that contours to your body while also providing a responsive bit of bounce. This fast response foam eliminates that “stuck in the mud” feeling commonly associated with memory foam.

The other major difference between the Puffy Lux and the Puffy Royal is the Sectional Cloud Technology. This is essentially a fancy term meaning that the Puffy Royal features zoned construction. This provides the Puffy Royal enough support to be suitable for all sleeper types, while also providing the comfort you need, whether you sleep on your stomach, back or side.

Original Purple Mattress Construction

Purple came onto the mattress scene with a brand new approach to sleep. Unlike Puffy, whose mattresses are constructed entirely of foam, all of the Purple mattresses use a patented hyper-elastic polymer material known as the Purple Grid™.

The Purple Grid™ offers a unique feel that buckles under pressure to alleviate aches and pains while remaining supportive everywhere else. Beneath the grid is 3.25 inches of polyurethane comfort foam which acts as a transition layer between the smart grid and the 4” of supportive high-density foam found in the base layer. The grid is supported on all sides by a foam border for better edge support.

Puffy vs Purple Mattress Firmness

So, now that you know what each mattress is made from, let’s talk about the firmness and feel!
While both the Puffy and Purple mattresses provide a balanced medium feel, we think they perform best for a slightly different audience.

Puffy: A Side Sleepers Dream

Puffy is hands down our top pick for strict side sleepers. Both the Lux and the Royal provide the undeniable comfort that memory foam is known for. Deep contouring reduces pressure throughout the hips and shoulders when sleeping on your side, and it does so without losing support through the lumbar region.

Unlike traditional memory foam mattresses which can cause you to sink deeply into the layers, Puffy remains supportive and responsive. You’ll still feel that gentle “hug”, just without any of the sluggishness commonly associated with memory foam. For this reason, combination sleepers who need ease of mobility are also likely to really enjoy both the Puffy Lux and the Puffy Royal.

Purple’s Got Your Back

While similar in firmness to the Puffy Lux, Purple responds to pressure in a very unique way. The walls of the Purple Grid™ are designed to buckle under weight providing a customized pressure relieving experience that we feel suits back sleepers best.

Additionally, combination sleepers should enjoy the responsiveness of the grid which makes transitioning from one position to the next quite easy. Both mattresses do an excellent job of isolating movement, which is great if you or your partner are particularly restless sleepers.

Puffy vs Purple - Which is Best for Heavier Sleepers?

It’s important to note that mattress firmness is subjective. Petite individuals will almost always experience the firmness of a mattress differently from a heavier individual. In general, the lighter you are the more likely you are to experience a firmer feel. On the other hand, heavier individuals may experience a softer feel when sleeping on the same bed.

If you are a heavier sleeper (250+ pounds) we generally advise a taller mattress profile and one that incorporates coils or springs to provide the needed support and durability. If you fall into this category we would recommend checking out Purple’s hybrid options. The Purple Hybrid and Purple Hybrid Premier both pair the Purple Grid™ with coils making them a better option for plus-sized people.

Puffy vs Purple - Which Mattress Sleeps Cooler?

While both Purple and Puffy made our best cooling mattress list, we’d have to admit, Purple is a clear winner for hot sleepers. The Purple Grid™ features a honeycomb structure with over 2500 channels through which air can flow freely providing Purple with a true temperature neutral sleep surface. Purple’s mattress cover is also super soft and breathable, ensuring a cooler night’s sleep.

The Puffy Lux also does a great job of regulating temperature throughout the night. Memory foam is commonly known to trap heat but almost every layer of the Puffy Lux works to reduce heat retention and increase airflow. But, if you are really looking for a cooler sleeping experience and are looking to stick with memory foam, the Puffy Royal is your best bet.

Pricing, Sleep Trials and Warranties

The Original Purple mattress beats Puffy when it comes to price, with a Queen retailing at $1099. A Queen-sized Puffy Lux starts at $1795 while a the Puffy Royal starts at $2695. Puffy frequently offers a $300 discount bringing the cost down to around $1495 and $2395, respectively. Unfortunately, at this time, Puffy does not offer a split King option.

Both brands have similar in-home sleep trials with Puffy offering 101-nights and Purple offering 100-nights. This is pretty much on par with industry standards and allows you an opportunity to try out the bed risk-free from the comfort of your home.

Purple comes with a 10 year limited warranty which is pretty standard for the mattress industry. While Puffy, on the other hand, comes with an almost unheard of lifetime warranty. Both warranties are only good for the original purchaser and do not transfer if you later sell the bed on.

Puffy vs Purple - Which Should You Buy?

Purple and Puffy haven’t become two of the most popular bed in a box brands for no reason. Both beds feature premium materials and deliver undeniable value. So the question isn’t “Which is better?” but rather, “Which is better for you?”. So let’s recap!

Puffy

  • If you’re a side sleeper we think you’ll be most pleased with the Puffy Lux or the Puffy Royal. Deep contouring gives Puffy an advantage over Purple when it comes to sleeping on your side. At the same time, we were extremely impressed with how well Puffy managed to relieve pressure without causing our midsection to dip or sag.
  • If you prefer a classic memory foam feel then Puffy is gonna be your best bet. Purple’s unusual design can take some adjusting to and isn’t for everyone, but if you prefer to feel like your mattress is gently cradling you….Puffy is the way to go.

Purple

  • If you are a hot sleeper it doesn’t get much better than Purple. Purple is hands down the most breathable mattress we’ve reviewed thanks to the honeycomb grid. Purple also makes some amazingly cool (literally and figuratively) bedding. The Purple pillow and the Purple sheets are some of the most breathable, temperature neutral sleep accessories we’ve seen and they pair wonderfully with the mattress.

  • If you’ve struggled to find comfort with a traditional foam or innerspring mattress and are open to trying something new, Purple could be the answer you’ve been looking for. The Original Purple mattress provides deep pressure-relief while bouncing back into shape quickly, this makes mobility on the Purple mattress a breeze.
