What is a weighted blanket and why do you need one?

Weighted blankets are as the name implies and generally range from 5lbs-30lbs for single person use. The weight comes from plastic pellets or glass beads that have been sewn inside the blanket. But why do you need one?

It is estimated that 50-70 million Americans suffer from sleep-related problems, with the CDC declaring sleep disorders a Public Health Epidemic. Taking a non-pharmaceutical approach, the Gravity blanket uses Deep Touch Pressure Stimulation (DTPS) to mimic a hug, this increases serotonin and melatonin, hormones associated with happiness and relaxation. DTPS also decreases the stress hormone cortisol, allowing you to fall asleep faster and stay asleep! The weight from the blanket also helps minimize tossing and turning, allowing users to achieve deeper REM cycle sleep.

In addition to reducing stress and improving sleep, weighted blankets can help:

  • Manage PTSD symptoms
  • Autism spectrum disorder
  • Sensory processing disorders
  • Restless leg syndrome
  • Fibromyalgia pain
  • Improve focus for ADHD
  • Help manage OCD
  • Reduce travel anxiety (Gravity sells travel blankets too!)
  • Boost your mood

Gravity Construction

The Gravity blanket features a duvet cover made from velboa plush (100% polyester). Commonly used in children’s toys, velboa is known for its durability and soft plush feel. The inner blanket is made from 100% cotton.

Unlike other weighted blankets that commonly use plastic pellets, Gravity uses fine-grade glass beads to weight their blanket. This allows for enhanced comfort while also being better for the environment. The beads themselves are sewn into separate gridded compartments allowing for even weight distribution.

The blanket is equipped with both ties and buttons in 12 locations to help lock the inner blanket in place. This allows the weight from the blanket to remain evenly distributed throughout. This made a huge difference, as with other blankets we’ve tested, the weight does seem to shift to one side making the blanket difficult to manage. However, the Gravity blanket was much easier to lift and adjust over the body due to this feature.

The Gravity blanket is available in 15lb, 20lb and 25lb options for single person use. They also offer a Queen size option allowing for sharing your blanket with a partner, this option weighs in at 35lbs. When making your selection you should aim to purchase a blanket around 10% of your total body weight, give or take a few pounds. The blanket is available in 3 colors: white, grey and blue.

Gravity Experience

As expected the cover was incredibly soft and smooth to the touch and made for a very pleasant experience when I wrapped up in it. We chose the 20lb blanket for testing and I was really surprised at the even weight distribution. The additional ties and buttons really do the trick, I’ve tested several other blankets and in some cases all of the weight would shift to one side making it difficult to maneuver, so I was pleased to find the Gravity blanket did not have that problem.

We not only live in a hot humid climate but I tend to run hot as well, so I was worried the blanket might cause some sweating. I did read some reviews which said the blanket slept hot and that users removed the outer duvet cover for a cooler sleeping experience. I personally did not have any issues with the blanket being too warm and slept comfortably with the duvet in place. If this is a concern you may opt for Gravity’s cooling blanket as an alternative.

The blanket definitely helped eliminate any tossing and turning and after a week of use I noticed I was hardly (if at all) waking throughout the night. Overall, I did find the blanket offered a calm and secure feeling!
