When you think about purchasing a mattress, would you rather have a mattress made in China or one that is hand crafted, here in the United States of America for the same price? Well, the answer is obviously the hand crafted, USA made mattress. Brooklyn Bedding is one of the oldest bed in a box manufacturers and has a few advantages over their competitors. Let’s take a look at what sets them apart in this unbiased review of the Brooklyn Bedding Signature mattress.
Brooklyn Bedding started making mattresses in 1995 and one of the qualities that impressed me most is that the employees finishing your bed have a minimum of 10 year’s experience. That being said, It will probably be less likely that your mattress will have a defect with such experienced craftsman doing the final touches. What this also tells me is that they are a great employer if they can keep many employees for over 10 years, that’s impressive! You would think that with this level of quality there would be a hefty price tag, however, they are surprisingly affordable. In fact, they are one of the least expensive hybrid’s we have tested so far.

Hand-Crafted Construction
All of Brooklyn Bedding mattresses are CertiPUR-US certified which means when you bring this mattress into your home its safe for you and your kids to sleep on. Typically foam can emit a gas when you unwrap it, when a mattress is certified CertiPUR-US, however, it means the mattress is made without chemicals that can deplete the ozone, formaldehyde, heavy metals, or chemical flame retardants.
Brooklyn Bedding’s lineup features 6 different mattress designs, most of which are hybrids. Hybrid mattresses consist of 2 or more support structures such as foams and coils or latex and coils. Standing at a height of 11″, the Brooklyn Signature Hybrid is a combination of foam and coils as seen below.
- Cover: This is 1.5” and is foam quilted into the cover. The top layer is not removable so be sure to protect it with a mattress protector.
- 2” TitanFlex foam: This is a very responsive foam that contours to your body for optimum pressure relief. This foam is an open cell structure, which means it will sleep cooler than typical foam and on top of that it is infused with a cooling gel.
- 2” Energex foam: This is a firmer, more dense foam than the TitanFlex and works as a transition layer between the coils.
- 6” individually wrapped coils: The coils are individually wrapped to dampen the motion transfer. Furthermore, coils are great for the longevity and durability of the mattress.
- 1” High density foam: This layer is a base foam to protect the coils and provide additional support in the mattress.
Bonus: The Brooklyn Signature mattress has handles on the sides of the mattress. This is great for moving your mattress around. You would be surprised that most mattresses don’t have this extra feature, making heavy mattresses very cumbersome to move around.

Firmness & Feel of the Brooklyn Signature Hybrid
The Brooklyn Signature is available in soft, medium and firm. We tested the medium option and I have to say I was really impressed with the feel of this mattress. The Brooklyn Signature is wonderfully plush with a high-end, luxury feel. The top has a beautiful look with designed tufts, which is typically seen in higher end mattresses.
I was originally thinking it was going to be firmer but, while soft enough to accomodate even side sleepers, it does so without losing the support. We rated this mattress around a 6-7 on a firmness scale from 1-10, 10 being the firmest. The individually wrapped coils provide some nice bounce which makes for some relative ease when transitioning from one sleep position to another, this makes it a great choice for combo sleepers. That being said, we do think this mattress will work for all sleepers: back, side, stomach and combo. Heavier stomach sleepers, however, may wish to opt for the firm model. Strict side sleepers, on the other hand, should be pleased with the Brooklyn Signature! I am a petite-sized, side sleeper and most mattresses are too firm for me, however this was just right.

Is the Brooklyn Signature Hybrid Good for couples?
If you’ve read through any of our other mattress reviews you’ll already know that motion transfer and edge support are important considerations when sharing your sleep space with a partner. If you haven’t you may be wondering what the fuss is all about. Let’s find out!
Motion Transfer
If a mattress fails to isolate motion adequately your sleep is likely to suffer, especially if your partner tosses and turns throughout the night. Thankfully, we felt the motion transfer was little to none on the Brooklyn Signature. It did surprisingly well for a mattress with coils. The individually wrapped coils together with the foam upper layers really dampened the movement. So well done Brooklyn Signature, this will be a great mattress for couples who are prone to moving around in their sleep.
Edge Support
Edge support is essential for people who like to make full use out of every inch of their mattress. This matters a lot if you are a couple sleeping on a Full or Queen size mattress. You want to be able to sleep near the edge without falling off. In addition, it’s nice not to feel like the mattress compresses when you sit on the edge to put your shoes on.
The edge support on the Brooklyn Signature performed very well. It did better than most especially compared to the all foam mattresses. We did not feel like we were going to fall off while laying down and had nice support while sitting on the edge.

Does The Brooklyn Signature sleep Cool?
Being too hot or too cold at night can make or break your sleep experience. If you tend to sleep hot you already know what I’m talking about. For hot sleepers, finding a mattress with cooling benefits should be a priority. Some materials, such as memory foam have a tendency to run hot but many, like Puffy and Amerisleep have advanced cooling technologies that actually help you sleep cooler.
In general, innerspring and hybrid mattresses tend to retain less heat and help achieve an optimal sleep temperature. We felt the Brooklyn Signature slept neither hot, nor cool, rather it is right in between. We’d class it as temperature-neutral.
If you are a hot sleeper and a cooling mattress is a top priority, we’d recommend checking out the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Hybrid.
Brooklyn Signature Purchase Details
Free Sleep Trial
All Brooklyn mattresses come with a 120-night risk-free trial. This is a bit longer than the industry standard and should give you plenty of time to decide if your new mattress is a good fit. Should you decide it is not for you within these 120 nights, contact Brooklyn Bedding for a refund. Brooklyn does charge $99 mattress disposal fee.
Shipping and Returns
Like most bed in a box companies, Brooklyn offers free shipping on their mattresses. They are made to order and in some aspects that is great. The only downfall to that is it might take longer to receive than other mattresses we have tested. On average their shipping time is anywhere from 5-8 days. On the other hand because it is made to order and compressed right before shipping, Brooklyn Bedding mattresses will take less time to reshape once in your home.
Warranty
Brooklyn Bedding offers a 10 year warranty on all of their mattresses. They describe it as a full 10 year warranty, which means they will fix or replace the defects for up to 10 years without proration. Some companies we have seen have a warranty but prorate it depending on the amount of time you own the mattresses. Meaning if something happens within 5 years you might have to pay a fee for them to come out and fix it. It doesn’t seem Brooklyn has any fees and they clearly state what is covered on their site.
