Testing the Air-Pedic 1000

Recognized as one of the best adjustable air beds, Air-Pedic is part of a larger lineup of mattresses and bedding offered by selectabed.com. Designed by chiropractor Dr. Rick Swartzburg, Air-Pedic is made in the U.S.A in their factory in Agoura Hills, California. A popular Sleep Number alternative, Air-Pedic was created to “provide proper support for your spine, while helping to alleviate the stress on your muscles and joints.” Having reviewed both the Air-Pedic 800 and 850 previously, we were really able to gauge the similarities and differences. We have compiled this in our Air-Pedic 1000 mattress review and comparison.

Benefits of An Adjustable Air Mattress

One of the best features of an air adjustable bed is the dual adjustability. For example, if you are a couple and your husband prefers a firm mattress and you prefer soft, this might be the mattress that will save your sleep marriage. I know a lot of times couples prefer such different sleep preferences that they end up sleeping in separate rooms and that’s no fun. In fact, 1 in 4 marriages ends in sleep divorce 🙁 Adjustable air beds are a wonderful solution, allowing you and your partner to get the rest you need.

It’s also a great choice if you are pregnant, or suffer from injuries, illness, or chronic pain conditions. As your sleep needs and preferences change, so does your bed.

Air-Pedic 1000 Mattress Construction

So now that you know the benefits of owning an adjustable air bed, let’s get into how the Air-Pedic 1000 is constructed. Standing at a height of 14.5”, the Air-Pedic layers are as follows:

Kool-Flow Micro-Vented Bamboo Viscous Cover: This is one of our favorite mattress covers. It is super soft and stretchy and the fact that it is bamboo makes it all-natural. The bamboo works well to regulate temperature and the stretchiness lets the foam underneath contour to the body easier.

1” Hypergel Plush Top Cooling Foam: This gel-infused foam layer is a responsive cooling layer that will keep you from getting hot at night. Super soft, this layer makes the bed feel very plush.

2” Gel-Infused Cooling Foam: Yet another cooling layer that has a more slow response feel. This allows your body to slowly sink in and provide amazing pressure relief. It works well with the layer above to keep you from feeling stuck in the mud.

2” Plush 5lb. Density Memory Foam: The memory foam in this layer really provides a nice buffer between the foam above and the air chambers below to make sure you don’t feel like your sleeping on a blow-up mattress.

2” Resili-Flex Support Foam: This layer works to further enhance and provide additional support to the air chambers below.

6 Chamber, Multi-Zone Air System: This system allows you to adjust the lumbar, feet, and head separately with their app or controller that comes with the unit. Made of medical-grade, ultra-flexible urethane, the chambers are durable as well as mold and mildew resistant.

Adjusting your bed: The air chambers can be adjusted through the use of the digital remotes provided or, if you prefer, through your smart device.

Certifications

Air-Pedic holds a host of certifications ensuring the safety of your new mattress. All of the foams are hypoallergenic, non-toxic, and environmentally friendly. While it is common to see mattress companies have the CertiPUR-US certification, very few have GREENGUARD GOLD. The difference between the two is CertiPUR-US refers to the foam only, while the GREENGUARD GOLD certification is for the assembled finished mattress. GREENGUARD also has more stringent guidelines for the amount of emitted gasses. On top of the two popular certifications, Air-Pedic also has The Green Bear Mark of Excellence. The bottom line is that this mattress will be safe to bring into your home and has minimal off-gassing.

Firmness and Feel Of The Air-Pedic 1000

As discussed, firmness for the Air-Pedic can change depending on the setting you choose. However, the overall feel of the Air-Pedic 1000 is quite plush, providing superior pressure relief and comfort, especially important for side sleepers. The responsive top layer of gel-infused foam keeps sleepers lifted, allowing for an easier transition of movement, while at the same time enhancing the cooling benefits of the mattress. This means it could be a great choice for combination sleepers as well. The 7” of high-quality foam that lays overtop the 6 air chambers does an excellent job of eliminating the feel of the air bladders underneath, providing seamless comfort.

Does Air-Pedic Work For Hot Sleepers?

Yes! We think it should be a solid option for hot sleepers.

Temperature plays a huge role in how well we sleep. Too hot or too cold and you’re sure to have a sleepless night. Finding your ideal sleep temperature is paramount to getting a good night’s rest. Air-Pedic has been designed with this in mind, as we mentioned earlier the top layer of foam is gel-infused to provide a cool sleep surface and mitigate heat. But if your biggest concern is finding the best cooling mattress, we suggest adding Air-Pedic’s Optional Airflow Transfer System.

Optional patented airflow transfer system

Offered as an optional add-on, the Airflow transfer system features a unique series of holes located in the top layer of the mattress that works together with grooved channels found in the bottom layer. This allows the air to pass through the holes, down into the channels where it expels outwards, away from the bed. Enhanced breathability means a cooler sleep experience and less heat build-up in your bed.

What Sleep Position Is Air-Pedic Best Suited For?

Because it offers adjustability, sleepers can choose from a range of firmnesses that could work well for most sleep positions and sleep types. While we felt it was a particularly good choice for side sleepers and combination sleepers, the plush comfort layers could be a touch soft for some stomach sleepers, even on the firmest setting.

We also think the Air-Pedic 1000 is an especially good option for petite individuals. How soft or firm you perceive a mattress to be has a lot to do with your body type. Heavier individuals will generally feel that a mattress is much softer while a petite individual may find the same mattress feels much firmer. Petite individuals (under 130lbs) don’t exert the same pressure and as such, may not sink into the bed as much. That being said, with the option to dial down to the softest setting combined with 7” of plush, contouring foam, Air-Pedic is a solid choice if you fall in this weight range.

Is Air-Pedic Good For Couples?

Yes! Air-Pedic is a great choice for those who share their bed, whether with your partner, your kids, or your pets! So, we know the Air-Pedic 1000 offers dual adjustability but when considering what mattress is best for couples you’ll also want to pay attention to details like edge support and motion transfer.

Motion Transfer

The better a mattress isolates motion, the less likely you or your partner are to experience any sleep disturbances when the other moves around. The thick, plush foams that cover the air bladders of the Air-Pedic 1000 do an excellent job of reducing motion transfer, while also eliminating any chance that sleepers will feel the air bladders beneath them. This is especially important if you are a light sleeper and prone to waking easily from noise or movement.

Edge Support

The air chambers are surrounded by a firm foam frame that provides enhanced edge support. The edge support was good when sitting on the edge of the bed, as well as lying near the edges. This is particularly important for couples sharing a full or queen-sized bed as good edge support allows sleepers to utilize the full surface of the mattress without feeling as if they will fall out of the bed.

Is Air-Pedic a good choice for Heavy Individuals?

Yes, the Air-Pedic 1000 should be a good choice for heavy or plus-sized individuals (over 230 lbs). The thick foam layers work well to buffer stress placed on the air chambers. For individuals weighing 300+ lbs, you’ll want to contact Air-Pedic directly to discuss height and weight. They can then determine if extra re-enforcement is necessary to protect the air chambers and also provide recommendations if another Air-Pedic model would be a better fit.

How much Does the Air-Pedic 1000 cost?

Offering the ultimate in adjustability and customization, adjustable air mattresses come with a hefty price tag. That being said, it is a luxury mattress and we think it’s worth every penny if you can afford to splurge. A Queen size mattress will run you $5099 before any deals or discounts. Mattress Sizing and Dimensions

The prices listed below are before any discounts are applied. From brand to brand bed sizes and dimensions are generally the same, however, Air-Pedic is not available in a twin or full sized option.

Warranty and Sleep trial

When it comes to warranties, Selectabed hands down beats the competition. Providing a 30-year warranty, Air-Pedic has one of the longest warranties we’ve seen for any adjustable air mattress. This is likely due to the high-quality foams and air chambers found inside the Air-Pedic, all of which are built for long-lasting durability.

On top of a great warranty, Air-Pedic comes with a 120-night sleep trial. So for any reason, if you decide you don’t like the mattress, they will work out a pickup for the mattress and return your money. But before deciding on a return we suggest taking advantage of Selectabed’s free foam customizations.

Mattress Customizations

If you receive the mattress in your home and it is just not right, Selectabed will work with you to make it right. With their modular cover system and their local Southern California factory, they can offer rapid and completely free customizations and exchanges that include modification of the comfort or support foam layering to change the firmness, support, and/or feel of the mattress without having to send the mattress back during their 4-month return policy.

This can save you the hassle of returning the mattress, which, let’s face it can be a bit of a pain. It’s also much more environmentally friendly as mattress disposal poses a serious problem for the environment. Being able to change out the layers to better match your sleep needs means potentially one less mattress sent to a landfill!

Compatible Mattress Frames and Bases

Choosing a compatible foundation is important for the health of your mattress. It is recommended that you choose a firm, solid surface, such as a platform or adjustable base. Surfaces such as floors should be avoided as they are host to dust, mold, and bugs. Slatted frames can be used but Selectabed recommends slats no greater than 3” apart. Make sure to follow these guidelines so as not to void your warranty!

Air-Pedic vs Sleep Number Comparison

When looking to purchase the best adjustable air mattress, the first brand that may come to mind is Sleep Number. Air-Pedic is one of the most popular Sleep Number alternatives and has a competitive advantage when it comes to pricing, warranties, and adjustability.

One of the biggest differences between these two brands is the number of air chambers. Sleep number is constructed with one air bladder per side of the mattress while Air-Pedic comes with 3. This means that with Air-Pedic you can independently adjust the head and shoulders, the midsection, and the legs and feet.

Sleep Number’s single air chamber on each side can cause air to dispel outwards, towards the head and feet, which can cause some sleepers to experience a hammock effect. This pulls the spine out of alignment and can lead to back pain over time.

Another notable difference is the supportive foam framework surrounding the air chambers. Air-Pedic includes a firm foam center, separating either side of the bed. This helps prevent sleepers from rolling into the center of the mattress, without which couples may struggle to find comfort. This has been a noted complaint of Sleep Number’s customer reviews.

Is Air-Pedic Right For Me?

There is lots to love when it comes to Air-Pedic. Zoned support, premium foams, and dual adjustability are just a few of the stand apart features of this line of mattresses. Add to that an excellent warranty and free customizations and it’s clear Air-Pedic has your back. 😊

We know we love this mattress but will it be great for you? That will be up to your needs. It is expensive but, if you can squeeze it, we think this mattress will be great for all sleeper types, providing support and pressure relief as you have never felt before.
