Naturepedic Crib Mattress review
I think every mother goes through the fear of something bad happening to their baby. I know I did! With so many options out there for crib mattresses having one that is safe for your baby inside and out is so important. We received the Naturepedic crib mattress to test for our youngest baby. This is one of the top crib mattresses on the market today and we love it for our little one. Take a look at our unbiased Naturepedic Crib Mattress review to see what makes this crib mattress so great.
Sudden Unexpected infant death (SUID)
Sudden Unexpected Infant Deaths or otherwise known as SUID is terrifying, however there are things you can do to help prevent this from happening like starting with a great crib mattress. When I started looking into SUID, I was shocked to see that 26% of the causes were from accidental suffocation. Being that babies spend the majority of their day sleeping or in their crib its best to get one that is breathable, firm and not full of toxins.
When our oldest was about 4 months old she started turning over. Even though we had a breathable mattress I couldn’t help worry for the first couple of nights she slept on her stomach. I don’t think I would have trusted if the mattress was not breathable. A great feature of the Naturepedic crib mattress is the fact that its breathable yet waterproof. This is especially important for babies that throw up a lot.
Breathable Firm Construction
- Waterproof Breathable Pad: This material is a waffle like construction that allows you to completely breath if you press your face into the mattress. This is especially beneficial if your baby starts to turn over and sleep on their side. Having the peace of mind knowing your child is safe in their bed means you can rest easy, well at least when your baby is sleeping.
- Polyethylene Waterproof Surface: This surface is 100% waterproof, which will be great for babies that spit up a lot and for the future when it gets flipped to the toddler side and they are potty training. It is also dust mite and bug proof.
- Organic Cotton Batting: This layer provides a little bit of padding and is USDA organic and sourced from US farmers.
- Wave Support ™ Lightweight Core: This super firm core is durable and light weight, making it easy for changing sheets.
Babies are so tiny and more sensitive to things that might be in the air. Typical mattresses are made with chemicals and even though it might say natural, it doesn’t mean organic. The Naturepedic crib mattress is organic and is certified by GOTS/GOLS (Global Organic Textile/Latex Standard), a third party company. What does this mean for your baby? No pesticides, GMO’s, or chemical processing. Not only is Naturepedic certified by GOTS/GOLS, but it is also Non-GMO verified, MADE SAFE, GREENGUARD and many more. Check out Naturepedic’s complete list of certifications.
Not only can you expect Naturepedic mattresses to be non toxic, but eco-friendly. Naturepedic has the mark of responsible forestry from the Forest Stewardship Council®/ Rainforest Alliance. What this means is their wood comes from a chain of custody that meets FSC standards. The standards include criteria that is designed to protect lands and ecosystems. Green America is another certification that Naturepedic holds. This shows they go above and beyond, ensuring they are ethical as well as socially and environmentally responsible.
Safe Crib Mattress and Breathable
With our first child we had the Newton Baby mattress, which is a completely breathable mattress. It worked well for her, however, it would not have worked for our youngest because she throws up so much. If you have a mattress that is not waterproof, you will have to wash the whole mattress when the baby spits up. Most mattresses that are waterproof are not breathable. Some that claim to be breathable are also completely porous allowing for mold and bacteria to grow. Not something you want your little one breathing in! What makes the Naturepedic crib mattress so great is the fact that it’s breathable, waterproof and on top of all that, it’s organic.
There are two sides to this mattress, which means it will last until your kid is ready for an adult bed. You can easily flip the mattress over for a softer feel. It’s still very firm on both sides, which is preferred in a crib mattress for a safer sleep surface.
The Naturepedic crib mattress has an incredible limited lifetime warranty. So this means you can use this for multiple kids. Although this warranty is non-transferable, the mattress is well made and will be able to pass down to family or friends.
The Naturepedic crib mattress is a little on the expensive side compared to other mattresses. It is $349 for the lightweight wave support and is $379 if you want coils. Personally I don’t see the need for coils as it will make the mattress heavy and hard to change the sheet. Although this mattress is one of the most expensive on the market, it is worth it to have the peace of mind that your baby is sleeping on a safe surface. Additionally, Naturepedic does offer financing through Affirm.
