Bear Pro Mattress Construction

Standing at a height of 12” the Bear Pro mattress is an all-foam mattress constructed with 4 layers. The foams are certified CertiPUR-US meaning they are made without harmful chemicals and substances such as formaldehyde, heavy metals, and ozone depleters. Let’s break down the layers:

  • Breathable Celliant Mattress Cover – Celliant technology has been proven to promote better sleep, increase performance, and aid in recovery. By converting your body’s heat into infrared light, Celliant promotes increased circulation and cell oxygenation. This translates to better energy, endurance, strength, and stamina. As such, Celliant has been determined by the FDA to be a medical device. Additionally, Celliant helps regulate body temperature providing a cooler, drier sleep experience. Learn more about Celliant and its benefits here.
  • Copper-Infused Foam – This thin layer of copper-infused foam helps mitigate heat retention commonly associated with memory foam or all-foam mattresses. Copper is a natural thermal conductor, pulling away excess heat for a cooler night’s sleep. Copper is also anti-microbial, naturally repelling microbes, bacteria, and allergens. This means the Bear mattress could be an especially good choice for allergy sufferers.
  • Gel Memory Foam – The comfort layer provides nice contouring, a trait memory foam is known for. Sleepers should experience some nice cradling and pressure relief, while the gel found in this memory foam layer, also helps to reduce heat.
  • Responsive Transition Foam – While classic memory foam mattresses tend to hug the body closely, increasing heat buildup and causing a “stuck in the mud” feeling, this responsive foam layer gives the Bear Pro a more balanced feel. Sleepers will still experience the pressure-relieving benefits of memory foam while also enjoying increased responsiveness and motility.
  • High-Density Support Foam – This layer provides support and long-lasting durability.

Firmness & Feel of The Bear Pro Mattress

The Bear Pro mattress is advertised on Bear’s website as having a firmness rating of 6.5 out of 10. After reviewing the mattress ourselves, we would agree this is pretty spot on. We rated the mattress as medium-firm, between 6.5 and 7 in firmness.

We experienced a gentle hug-like sensation when first crawling into bed but we were quickly met by the supportive layers below. This balance between support and pressure relief means the Bear Pro mattress could be suitable for most sleep positions and sleeper types.

Body Type & Sleep Position

Your experience with the Bear Pro mattress will have a lot to do with your weight and sleep position. Let’s break down what to expect!

Side Sleepers – Individuals who prefer sleeping on their sides generally prefer a softer mattress, providing more body contouring and pressure relief. For strict side sleepers, pressure build-up under the hips and shoulders can make for an uncomfortable sleep experience.

The Bear Pro mattress offers good pressure relief, especially for sleepers weighing between 130 and 230 lbs. While lightweight individuals ( less than 130 lbs.) may find that the Bear Pro is not quite plush enough, especially for those who prefer a softer overall mattress feel. Heavier individuals may find themselves sinking too deeply into the mattress, meeting the firmer foam layers beneath. This may leave strict side sleepers in this weight range without adequate pressure relief.

Back Sleepers – The medium-firm feel of the Bear Pro mattress works exceptionally well for back sleepers of all weights. We felt our weight was evenly distributed across the mattress when sleeping on our backs, providing adequate support for our spine. We’d say it is best suited to back sleeping.

Stomach Sleepers – Strict stomach sleepers are best served by mattresses that provide firm support. That’s because softer mattresses can cause the hips to sink, placing pressure on your spine and ultimately leading to discomfort and pain.

The Bear Pro should work fairly well for lightweight and average weight sleepers. You’ll experience a bit of conforming but overall, we felt quite comfortable in this position. For stomach sleepers weighing over 230 pounds, the Bear Pro mattress may not provide enough support. We’d recommend going with a firmer mattress, in particular, an innerspring or hybrid mattress with a supportive coil foundation such as the Bear Hybrid.

Combination Sleepers – We didn’t sink as deeply into the Bear Pro mattress as is common with softer, memory foam mattresses. This allowed for greater ease of movement from one sleep position to the next. And because the Bear Pro suited such a wide range of body weights and sleep positions we think combination sleepers are sure to enjoy the Bear Pro mattress.

Is The Bear Pro Good For Hot Sleepers?

As discussed in the construction section, the Bear Pro comes with a lot of cooling features. In addition to the celliant mattress cover, the foam layers are infused with copper and gel to help mitigate heat retention. Open-cell foam technology also provides better breathability, expelling excess heat. That being said, all-foam mattresses tend to run hotter than latex or hybrid mattresses. We’d say the Bear Pro slept more temperature-neutral than cool.

If you are an exceptionally hot sleeper you may want to check out the Bear Hybrid mattress or see our favorite best cooling mattresses.

Is the Bear Pro Good For Couples?

Sharing your bed with a partner, a child, or a pet can present some unique challenges. Being aware of these challenges when you pick out your new mattress can go a long way in ensuring both you and your partner are happy with your new purchase.

Motion Transfer – The Bear Pro does an excellent job of isolating motion. The memory foam layers help absorb excess motion, reducing sleep disturbances throughout the night. In addition to offering excellent motion isolation, the Bear Pro mattress sleeps silently, making no noise as you move or shift. This is especially helpful if you are a light sleeper prone to waking easily.

Edge Support – Edge Support is particularly important if you are sharing a Full or Queen size bed. Mattresses with poor edge support may feel smaller than those with good edge support because you won’t be able to utilize the full surface of the mattress. For most people, this isn’t a deal-breaker, but it is good to be aware. You may wish to choose a larger mattress, for example, a King or California King size bed, if edge support is lacking.

Surprisingly, the Bear Pro mattress offers pretty decent edge support. We did feel some compression when sitting on the edge of the bed but lying on the edge of the mattress we did not feel as if we would fall out. Individuals who need to use the edge of the mattress to assist in getting into and out of the bed should also be pleased, as the Bear Pro provided decent support.

Bear Pro Mattress Purchase Details

Free Sleep Trial

Bear offers a 100-night risk-free sleep trial. This is standard for the mattress industry and allows you the opportunity to test your new mattress in the comfort of your own home. You are required to keep the mattress for a minimum of 30-days before initiating a return. This too is fairly standard. Adjusting to a new mattress can require a bit of a break-in period. That’s because the mattress materials may need time to settle in and conform to your body. This also gives your body time to re-adjust if you’ve become accustomed to sleeping on a mattress with poor support.

Shipping and Return Policy

Within the lower 48 states both shipping and returns are free. Shipping a mattress to Alaska or Hawaii will cost an additional $100. Shipping to these 2 states is non-refundable.

In addition to returns being 100% free (no processing fees or restocking fees), Bear will work with you to get the mattress donated to a local charity. This not only helps those in need but helps reduce landfill waste.

Warranty

The Bear mattress comes with a 10-year limited warranty. It is valid for the original purchaser only. It’s important to note that many mattress companies, Bear included, require that you use your mattress on a suitable surface. Bear’s warranty states that the mattress must be “used normally for its intended purposes and on a rigid, solid surface or slatted bed base that is structurally capable of supporting the weight of the mattress and user(s).” To learn more about what mattresses bases are compatible with your new mattress check out Bear’s warranty page.

Unboxing The Bear Pro Mattress

The Bear Pro mattress is a popular bed-in-a-box that is purchased online and delivered to your doorstep. It will arrive in a box, making it significantly easier to maneuver into your home before setting up. Once out of the box you will find the mattress rolled up and sealed inside a plastic lining. Position the mattress on your bed frame or foundation, unroll and remove the outer plastic wrap. The mattress will begin to immediately expand. You may notice some minor off-gassing during this process, don’t worry that’s completely normal and should dissipate within a few hours (if you are especially sensitive to odor this could be a bit longer).

Most bed-in-a-box mattresses can take a few hours to fully expand. This is especially true for the Bear Pro. We tested the bed within the first few hours and discovered we were rolling into the center of the mattress. As a result, our first impressions of the Bear Pro were that it was quite soft. Coming back to the mattress the next day the bed was significantly firmer and we no longer rolled into the center. So, if you find yourself having a similar problem, or your first impressions are that the mattress is softer than you’d expect, you may want to give the mattress more time to fully expand.

Compatible Bed Frames and Foundations

To get the best results from your new mattress you’ll want to ensure you pair your new Bear Pro with a suitable foundation. Choosing a supportive foundation is also important so as not to void your mattress warranty. Bear’s website states that using a solid foundation and a strong bed frame is ideal for any mattress. Other suitable options include platform beds and adjustable bases. You can find a selection of suitable bed bases on bearmattress.com. Or, check out these popular adjustable bases on Amazon.

Bear Pro Mattress Review Conclusion

The Bear Pro mattress packs a punch with feature-rich benefits such as a celliant mattress cover, copper and gel-infused foams, and open-cell technology. Recognized by the FDA for its medical applications, celliant aids in performance and recovery, making this a great choice for athletes and active individuals. While copper offers antimicrobial properties and reduces allergens.

Overall, the Bear Pro mattress is an impressive all-foam mattress with a balanced feel that suits a wide variety of sleep positions, body types, and sleep preferences. That being said, we found it particularly well suited to back and combination sleepers, as well as couples.
