Sleep Number vs Tempur-Pedic Mattress Construction

One of the most important things to look for when shopping for a new mattress is how well that mattress will keep you supported. Optimally, you want a mattress that keeps the spine in a neutral alignment while providing enough relief through your pressure points to ensure a comfortable night’s sleep. How each mattress achieves this goal can vary drastically. The Sleep Number and Tempur-Pedic support systems are very different, each with pros and cons you should be aware of when making your choice.

Sleep Number Mattress Construction

Sleep Number is an adjustable air bed that utilizes air chambers connected to a pump that allow you to control the fill of air. By adjusting how soft or firm the bed is at any given time you can control the support you receive. The air chambers are then surrounded by a supportive wall of foam and topped with memory foam to provide comfort and pressure-relief.

Adjustments to the fill of the air chambers can be made through the Sleep Number app. This does require a WiFi/Bluetooth connectivity but allows for some pretty cool smart bed features such as sleep tracking.

Tempur-Pedic Mattress Construction

Tempur-Pedic, on the other hand, is known for its proprietary memory foam, though their product line does include options for hybrid mattresses as well. Memory foam is known for its tremendous ability to provide contouring and pressure-relief. As such, it is one of the most popular mattress types available today. All of the Tempur-Pedic models include different cooling technologies to help mitigate heat retention, which is commonly associated with memory foam.

Is Sleep Number or Tempur-Pedic Better For Couples?

Both Sleep Number and Tempur-Pedic have pros and cons when it comes to couples sharing a bed. Now, if you are like my husband and me, maybe you and your partner prefer different firmness options. This is where adjustable air beds really excel! Each side of the bed is controlled independently, so if one of you prefers a firmer setting you can dial up the air for a firmer feel, or dial it down for a softer feel. No more compromising on comfort! This gives Sleep Number an advantage over Tempur-Pedic when it comes to adjustability.

One disadvantage of the Sleep Number mattress construction is that it only utilizes one air chamber per side of the bed. This allows the air to dispel outwards in the chamber, which can cause mid-section sagging. Another challenge with the overall design of Sleep Number is the lack of a support bar down the middle of the bed. Without a supportive bar to separate the right and left air chambers, you and your partner are more prone to rolling into the center of the bed. Again, this causes the air to dispel towards the outer edges of the bed. This is especially likely to happen if you and your partner tend to prefer different firmnesses.

We’ve reviewed some of the best adjustable air beds on the market and we found that air beds with multiple air chambers, such as the Air-Pedic and the ReST Performance mattress, tend to have an advantage over Sleep Number for this reason. Learn more about why it might be time to upgrade to an air bed and why air beds are a great choice for couples.

Motion Isolation

Motion isolation is important if you or your partner tend to toss and turn during the night. Or perhaps you have different sleeping hours and don’t wish to disturb each other when moving around or entering and exiting the bed. How well a bed can isolate this movement can be a big factor in how well you sleep throughout the night.

Memory foam beds generally provides excellent motion isolation. It eliminates the squeaky, bounciness of traditional innerspring mattresses and dampens any motion disturbances. While both Sleep Number and Tempur-Pedic utilize memory foam, we think Tempur-Pedic definitely has the edge on motion isolation.

Is Sleep Number or Tempur-Pedic Better for Hot Sleepers?

Another important factor to consider is how well your new mattress will regulate temperature. Temperature can directly affect how well you sleep, as you may well know if you have ever woken up sweating in the dead of night. While adjusting the thermostat can help you regulate the ambient temperature, things like your mattress and the bedding you use also play a large role in achieving restful sleep.

We mentioned earlier that memory foam notoriously retains heat, but the undeniable comfort that memory foam provides has led to serious advancements in cooling technology. Tempur-Pedic, like may other popular memory foam brands, infuses their foams with cooling gel. That being said, we felt the Tempur-Pedic Cloud slept temperature neutral, rather than cool.

Sleep Number also features gel-infused memory foam in its top layer, but overall the mattress uses less memory foam than Tempur-Pedic, giving it a bit of an edge for cooling.
