Helix Sleep Quiz

The first thing you might notice when visiting helixsleep.com is their mattress quiz. This is a handy tool that can help you discover which mattress is best suited to your body type and sleep position.

This is especially helpful because they have 6 different mattresses in their lineup. Each model is available with Luxe upgrade features for an additional cost.  If you get a minute try the sleep quiz, it is short and sweet.

We know choosing a bed can be hard but Helix truly has a mattress for everyone. In addition to the 6 different firmness levels, they also have the Helix Plus. The Helix Plus is designed specifically for heavier-weight sleepers.

Construction of the Helix Dawn

Helix Sleep mattresses are 100% handmade in the U.S.A. When you purchase from Helix Sleep you are helping stimulate the US economy through materials produced entirely in the United States and assembled in domestic factories.

Mattress Cover: The mattress cover is soft to the touch and has a stretchy feel.  It is also aerated to ensure breathability when sleeping.

Comfort Layer: This is a responsive latex foam.  Instead of sinking in as you might with memory foam, this latex foam has a bouncy, firm feel.

Transition Layer: This High-Grade Polyfoam is slightly firmer and provides extra support and a great transition to the coils below.

Body Shape Layer: Individually wrapped coils are used to provide cradling support, they also help to dampen motion transfer.  Additionally, Helix also uses reinforced coils on the outside of the mattress for better edge support and increased durability.

Support Layer: DuraDense foam is a dense foam that provides support to the whole mattress.

Helix Dawn Construction

Certifications

All of the Helix mattresses are made with OEKO-TEX standard 100 and CertiPUR-US certified foam.  This means it will be free from formaldehyde, mercury, and other ozone depleters. Plus, when you open the mattress it won’t spill nasty toxins in the air that might be bad for you and your family.

Firmness & Feel

On the Helix Sleep website, they give the Helix Dawn an 8-9 on the firmness scale. We think it is more of a 7-7.5. The top comfort layers provide a gentle contour for some nice pressure relief but the overall feel of the mattress remains supportive and firm.

The pocketed coils work very well with the foam above to provide responsiveness and support.  In fact, they work so well together that we didn’t feel the coils underneath at all. This is unusual, as with most hybrid mattresses you are aware of the springs beneath you.

But is it right for you? Let’s take a look at how it performs based on your weight and sleep position!

Side Sleepers

Due to its medium-firm to firm feel, the Helix Dawn is not a great match for side sleepers, regardless of body weight. While the Dawn does offer some gentle contouring, it is likely not enough to provide adequate pressure relief.

If this is your preferred sleep position you might want to check out the Helix Sunset or Helix Midnight Luxe as both of these mattresses are designed with side sleepers in mind.

Back Sleepers

The Helix Dawn is designed with stomach and back sleepers in mind. That being said, lightweight back sleepers (under 130lbs)  are likely to run into the same problem as side sleepers, not enough pressure relief. In this case, the Helix Dusk or Helix Moonlight might be a better fit.

On the other hand, average-weight back sleepers should be pleased with the Helix Dawn. However, back sleepers in this weight range who prefer a bit more pressure relief might wish to consider the Helix Dawn Luxe.

The Dawn could also be a good fit for heavier back sleepers (over 230lbs). Individuals in this weight range are likely to experience a bit more pressure relief due to their weight, while still experiencing adequate spinal support.

Stomach Sleepers

This is where the Helix Dawn really excels, regardless of your weight range. Strict stomach sleepers will enjoy the medium-firm to firm feel, while still experiencing a bit of contouring.

The great thing about Helix is if you ended up with a mattress that doesn’t feel right they will send you out an additional layer to either make it firmer or softer free of charge.

Is The Helix Dawn Good For Couples?

Yes! The Helix Dawn is a great option for couples. It’s rare that we find a mattress with good edge support that also does a good job isolating motion. But the Helix Dawn does just that!

Motion Transfer

We felt the Helix Dawn did pretty well for motion transfer.  We really didn’t notice much movement and that was surprising because most mattresses with coils don’t do so well in this category.  It could be because they individually wrap the coils and also provide extra support on the outer edge of the bed.  The coils work well with the foam on top to dampen the movement while in bed.

Edge Support

We were very impressed with the edge support on the Helix Dawn.  They did a great job when making this mattress with enhanced supportive coils on the outer edges of the mattress.  When you are sitting on the edge of the bed you will feel pretty supported.  We also felt it was easy to sleep on the edge of the bed without feeling like we were going to fall off.

Does the Helix Dawn Sleep Cool?

The Helix Dawn did a good job of temperature regulation. Rather than sleeping hot or cold, the Dawn provided a temperature-neutral sleep experience. If you are a hot sleeper you may wish to check out our top picks for the best cooling mattresses.

Another option for those with their heart set on the Helix Dawn would be pairing it with an awesome cooling accessory such as the Pod Pro Cover. It’s hands down a must-have for hot sleepers and designed to fit a wide variety of mattress profiles.

Helix Dawn Purchase Details

Free Sleep Trial

Helix offers a 100-night trial on all of their mattresses.  It is pretty straight forward if you don’t like the mattress after trying it for 30 days you can call them and arrange for a return.

The 30 day break-in period is pretty standard for the bed in a box industry. Adjusting to a new mattress can take time. After the mattress is picked up they will process your refund. Still, returning a mattress can be a real pain. One of the best features Helix offers is the additional layer if you are feeling your mattress is not right.

We highly encourage customers to try this option prior to returning the mattress entirely. Mattresses pose a serious environmental concern as they fill up landfills. This option is a step in the right direction to limiting mattress waste.

Warranty

All standard Helix mattresses come with a 10-year warranty, which is very typical for the mattress industry. If you are looking for a longer warranty you might want to take a look at their Luxe models.  Luxe Helix mattresses include a 15-year warranty.

Indentations or sagging greater than an 1” that is not associated with improper use of a bed frame or foundation should be covered under the warranty. As such, pairing your new mattress with a supportive foundation is crucial to getting the best performance from your bed and ensuring your warranty remains valid.

How Much Does Helix Cost?

Something that stands out with Helix is they recognize our support system by offering a 15% discount to military, first responders, and teachers.  Furthermore, if you are a student you will also get hooked up with 15% off.

The Helix Dawn is reasonably priced with a Queen mattress priced at $1099. That being said, Helix frequently runs specials bringing the price down even more. Choosing a Compatible Bed Frame or Foundation

So what type of mattress foundation is suitable? Helix states, “Any foundation, box spring, frame, or other base on which the Mattress is placed that has slats greater than 5 inches apart will be considered improper for your Mattress and will void the warranty.”

Choose a bed frame that offers sufficient support for the mattress, foundation, and of course, you! Helix does offer a selection of bed frames and bases on their site. Prefer to shop around? Check out these best-selling adjustable bases on Amazon.

Helix Dawn Mattress Review Conclusion

Helix Sleep offers a wide variety of mattresses. The Helix Dawn is their firmest model and is best suited for back, stomach, and combination sleepers. The Dawn does have a Luxe upgrade option which provides enhanced lumbar support and increases the mattress profile height by 2 more inches.

We did find the Dawn was a bit softer than advertised on the website. We experienced nice pressure relief without sinking deeply into the mattress. Surprisingly, we did not feel the coils. This was a pleasant surprise as we have noticed some uncomfortable pressure points where the springs push back from other hybrid options. Overall, we have really enjoyed the Helix Dawn and look forward to reviewing more of their model lineup in the future.
