Top 5 Best Memory Foam Mattresses of 2019
Memory foam, a “viscoelastic” polyurethane foam, was developed by NASA in the 1960s, originally to increase the safety of aircraft cushions. In more recent years memory foam has taken the mattress industry by storm due to a myriad of benefits, primarily its contouring and pressure-relieving properties. That said, let’s dive in and discuss our top 5 picks for best memory foam mattresses of 2019.
For outer space to your inner space:
NASA released memory foam to the public in the 1980s and Tempur-Pedic was one of the first mattress companies to begin working with the material in mattresses and pillows. It became a popular material in medical settings as well as it allowed for an increase in blood flow and a decrease in pain, especially important for patients who were bedridden. It uses the natural heat from the body to contour and mold but early production of memory foam mattresses came with some problems–trapped heat and slow “spring back” of the foams were 2 big hurdles, as was cost. Memory foam was expensive to produce!
Since then, memory foam has undergone several technology phases, gradually decreasing the cost of production and making it more affordable for consumers. Mattress companies started using open cell structures to improve breathability and airflow and gel infused memory foam was designed to help consumers sleep cooler by reducing trapped heat. Early memory foam also suffered from slow response rates and could leave users feeling “stuck in the mud”. The mattress industry is bursting with companies trying to outdo each other with the latest technology, but the good news for us? Today there are plenty of fantastic options available for us to choose from. Here’s a look at our favorites.

Memory foam has some amazing benefits, but affordability isn’t always one of them. Nectar takes the lead here as one of the cheapest memory foam mattresses on our list. Starting at just under $800 for a queen, Nectar offers exceptional value for cost. While Nectar may be a bit too soft for some heavier sleepers and stomach sleepers, it’s definitely a great choice for side sleepers. With one of the longest sleep trials in the industry (365 days) and a forever warranty, it packs some incredible value.
Winner Best Back Sleeper 2019
Tempur-Pedic is one of the first companies to design memory foam mattresses and has been doing so since 1992. They have an extensive lineup available with plenty of options to choose from. We tested the Tempur-Pedic Cloud Prima and felt it rated around a 6.5 on the firmness scale. We did feel it was a bit firm for strict side sleepers, but if you are a back sleeper or change positions frequently through the night then this could be a great choice for you. Though its not our top choice for cooling comfort the Prima Cloud did a great job of sleeping temperature neutral.
