Best Mattresses Under $1000
While we all seek to find the perfect night’s sleep, spending thousands of dollars on a new bed just isn’t practical for everyone. The good news: there are plenty of beds available, priced under $1,000, that can leave you refreshed and ready for your day. So, whether you are a college student looking to save, or simply a bit more frugal, we have selected our top picks that won’t break the bank. Let’s take a look at which brands made the list!
Buying your new mattress
Buying a new mattress can feel daunting. There are so many options to choose from, so where do you start? For many of us, price is one of the first things we must consider. Luckily, in recent years, the bed-in-a-box industry has exploded online, allowing mattress companies to offer more competitive prices. This direct-to-consumer business model reduces traditional overhead costs previously seen with brick and mortar establishments. As such, companies are able to focus on producing better quality products made from better quality materials. It’s nice to know you have options, but which one is right for you?
With price already determined, it’s time to narrow down your perfect fit. Whether you are looking for a mattress best suited to your sleep style (side, back or stomach) or you want a specific mattress type, such as memory foam or traditional coils, our list is designed to help you navigate the murky waters. And remember, the perfect mattress is different for everybody. Our list is meant to serve as a guide to help you understand what you can expect from each brand, but ultimately the decision is yours. To put your mind at ease, each of the mattress brands below offer generous sleep trials to allow you to try your new bed in the comfort of your own home, risk-free.
Best Memory Foam
Snuggle-Pedic is designed by chiropractor Dr. Rick Swartzburg and has been the top rated mattress as verified by Amazon reviewers for 3 years running. Snuggle-Pedic is a favorite here at ASL Reviews because it is one of the few memory foam mattresses that offers free cusotm modifications. Unlike most beds we review, Snuggle-Pedic offers free modifications to its customers to help find the best fit for you. This customization really allows you to try the mattress risk-free. Should you find the mattress is too firm or too soft for your needs, simply call customer service and they will work with you to send out replacement foams to match your needs.
Snuggle-Pedic was also a top pick for cooling comfort. They combine their Kool-Flow Breathable Bamboo cover with their optional patented AirFlow Transfer System for some of the coolest sleeping we’ve experienced.
Best Side Sleeper
Memory Foam has some great qualities but being affordable isn’t always one of them. Nectar is one of the least expensive memory foam mattresses we have tested so far and offers exceptional value for money. Nectar also offers a longer than average sleep trial of 365 nights and an almost unheard of lifetime warranty. Nectar comes in on the softer side of the firmness spectrum at a 5.5 and is best suited for side sleepers and back sleepers. If you are looking for a memory foam mattress that won’t break the bank, then Nectar might be the right choice for you.
Best Combo Sleeper
Casper is a giant in the “bed-in-a-box” industry and for good reason. Casper utilizes a breathable, open-cell foams with a zoned support construction to create a mattress that suits all sleep positions–side, back and stomach sleepers. Like Level Sleep, it works off the idea that different regions of our body need different levels of support. Your head and shoulders, as well as hips and legs, generally need more pressure relief than your midsection, especially when sleeping on your side. Casper’s made from certiPUR-US certified foams and provide that needed pressure relief without sacrificing support in your lumbar region. This makes it one of the most versatile mattresses we’ve reviewed so far!
Best Stomach Sleeper
Lull is designed for optimal comfort and support in all sleep positions, but we felt it performed particularly well for stomach sleepers. It’s got an initial plush, soft feel as you sink onto the bed, but almost immediately you will be met with the support from the base layers underneath. The top layer of foam is made from gel-infused memory foam, designed to help you sleep cooler at night. It’s followed by a foam blend transition layer that provides a quicker response than found with memory foam, so you won’t feel “stuck-in-the-mud”. While it may be a bit too firm for some side sleepers it does manage to offer plenty of pressure relief, while still offering enough support through the midsection to make it an excellent choice for back and stomach sleepers.
Best Back Sleeper
Back sleepers will find tremendous comfort in mattresses that are neither too firm, nor too soft, which is where Ghostbed comes in. Ghostbed is a true medium to medium-firm mattress. It’s made with certiPUR-US certified foams meaning it has been certified safe for your home and the environment. Construction includes: Dunlop latex foam which provides breathability and a quicker responsiveness so you don’t get bogged down in the mattress. Followed by a gel-infused memory foam layer, allowing you to sleep cool throughout the night. Lastly, it’s constructed with 7.5″ of high density base foam which provide the necessary support to keep your spine in proper alignment, especially when sleeping on your back.
Best for Back Pain
Level Sleep is doctor recommended with over 10 years of development, including clinical trials. Research shows a significant increase in sleep quality by reducing pain associated with your mattress. It utilizes a TriSupport foam construction that allows for enhanced firmness through the lumbar region, allowing the spine to remain in a neutral position while sleeping. Like Casper, instead of stacking their foams top to bottom, they alternate different foams for head and shoulder, lumbar, and hips and legs. This gives you the support you need for your lumbar and the pressure relief you need for your hips and shoulders. Level Sleep does come in at an 8 out of 10 on the firmness scale. This makes it a great choice if you are a stomach or back sleeper. If you are a strict side sleeper or a combo sleeper, Casper, which offers a similar multi-zone support, may be a better bet.
Live and Sleep
Terms like “eco-friendly” and “organic” normally come with a hefty price tag. Live and Sleep, however, has a lineup of 3 different models all under $1,000 for queen and king mattresses, which are truly eco-friendly. Live and Sleep foams are certiPUR-US and OEKO-TEX certified foams. Their memory foams are open cell and manufactured in pressurized chambers, reducing the need for additional chemicals that can be harmful to your health. Live and Sleep also uses a smart recycled packing system that reduces their carbon footprint. We love a company with a cause, Live and Sleep scores bonus points due to it’s social impact. They donate a portion of each sale to The National Alliance to End Homelessness.
A common concern with budget options is “will it last?” Aviya is designed for optimal comfort and durability. It’s made with individually wrapped coiled and a high density, sag-resistant foam ensuring your new mattress is built to last. Aviya offers 3 different firmness options: plush, luxury firm and firm. We tested the luxury firm option and felt it was a great choice for stomach sleepers, as it rated a 7 out of 10 on the firmness scale. If you are a strict side sleeper or know you prefer something soft, we would highly recommend going for the plush model. Like the rest of the brands on our list, Aviya is made with certiPUR-US certified foams.
