While many popular bed in a box mattress brands focus on a one size fits all solution, Amerisleep has taken a different approach. Recognizing that the comfort and support needs of back, side, and stomach sleepers can vary significantly, the Amerisleep product lineup includes 5 different memory foam mattresses. Ranging from the very soft AS5 mattress to the very firm AS1 mattress, Amerisleep has earned a reputation as one of the best memory foam mattresses in the online mattress space. They recently expanded the lineup to include 3 hybrid options, providing even more options for sleepers to find their perfect fit. But is it right for you? Find out in our full Amerisleep AS3 hybrid mattress review.
Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid Mattress Construction
The Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid is made from a combination of Bio-Pur®, a plant-based, open-cell memory foam, and pocketed coils. Standing at 12” in height the AS3 Hybrid features zoned support technology. An all-foam border wraps around the pocketed coils and provides reinforced edge support, which is particularly useful for couples.
Zoned construction provides the mattress with firmer support through the midsection and softer support through the shoulders and below the hips, creating a wonderful blend of support and pressure-relief.
Lastly, the Amerisleep mattress cover is soft and cool to the touch. Though Amerisleep does recommend using a mattress protector, the cover can be unzipped and removed for machine washing. This is particularly useful if you have kids or pets that come in and out of the bed, as it makes taking care of your mattress a breeze. It’s not often we see a bed in a box mattress that is machine washable!

Benefits of Bio-Pur® vs Traditional Memory Foam
Memory foam is widely sought after for its undeniable ability to relieve pressure points and provide comfort. Particularly popular amongst those who suffer from aches and pain, memory foam is often a leading choice for chronic pain sufferers, such as those with fibromyalgia. But traditional memory foam comes with some pesky problems.
Slow to react, memory foam can leave sleepers feeling stuck in the mud, which is especially troublesome for combination sleepers. Traditional memory foam is also known to trap heat which can cause a decrease in quality of sleep, especially in those with a tendency to sleep hot.
Bio-Pur® is a solution to these common memory foam problems, while at the same time, delivering the unparalleled comfort and pressure relief memory foam is known for. Featuring renewable, plant-based oils (traditional memory foam is petroleum-based), Bio-Pur® minimizes the use of non-renewable resources, is more environmentally friendly, and low in VOCs.
Unlike traditional memory foams that have a slow response to pressure, Bio-Pur® responds quickly, relieving painful pressure points without leaving you feeling stuck. Additionally, Bio-Pur® reduces heat build-up and promotes breathability, a perfect solution for hot sleepers.
Memory Foam and Off-Gassing
Another common problem associated with traditional memory foam is off-gassing. Chemically treated, memory foam products emit an odor when first unboxed or opened in your home. Though this smell typically dissipates within a few hours, in some cases, off-gassing may be present for longer. For some, off-gassing may cause respiratory problems.
Alternatively, the Bio-Pur® foams used in all of the Amerisleep mattresses are manufactured using plant-based oils in place of petrochemicals. Not only are Amerisleep mattresses more eco-friendly, but they also have little to no noticeable odor when unboxed. For those who crave the contouring of memory foam but suffer from breathing problems, Amerisleep’s plant-based foams are sure to be a winner.
Firmness and Feel of the Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid
On a scale of 1 (softest) to 10 (firmest), we rated the AS3 Hybrid at a 5.5. Mattresses that fall in this range of medium firmness, tend to be crowd-pleasers, as they are suitable for a wide variety of sleep positions.
The pocketed coils provide some nice bounce and work nicely with the ultra-responsive memory foam for increased motility. This is especially important for combination sleepers who find themselves transitioning from one position to another throughout the night.
Like the all-foam model, the AS3 Hybrid could be a great choice for anyone who suffers from chronic aches and pain. The zoned construction does an excellent job of alleviating pressure through the hips and shoulders while still providing plenty of support for your back. As a result, side sleepers are also likely to really enjoy this bed.

Does the Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid Sleep Cool?
Yes! In fact, Amerisleep is one of our top picks for the best cooling mattress. In addition to using open-cell foams, the Amerisleep hybrid mattresses feature pocketed coils that improve airflow and breathability, reduce trapped heat, and allow you to sleep cooler. Rather than sinking deeply into the bed, the quick response foams work with the pocketed coils to provide buoyancy, while also helping to reduce trapped heat.
We are pretty confident you’ll sleep cool on whatever Amerisleep mattress you choose. But for hot sleepers, we also recommend pairing your new mattress with Amerisleep’s Tencel bed sheets. Luxuriously soft and cool to the touch, these are some of the best cooling sheets we’ve tested!
Is the Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid Good For Couples?
Choosing the right mattress can seem daunting enough as a solo sleeper. When it comes to sharing a bed with your partner, choosing the right mattress can seem even more complicated. If you are lucky, you and your partner share the same sleep and firmness preferences. If that’s the case, mattress shopping just got easier. Two important factors couples face when purchasing a new bed are motion isolation and edge support.
Motion Transfer
If you or your partner toss and turn, or you wake up easily, good motion isolation is a must-have. While the pocketed coils in the AS3 Hybrid provide a gentle bounce, we didn’t find this to interfere with our sleep experience. Memory foam, which is known to isolate motion exceptionally well, helped to dampen any motion created by the coils.
Edge Support
Edge support is particularly important for couples sharing a Full or Queen size bed. The better the edge support, the larger the mattress will feel as you can comfortably stretch out to the edges of the mattress. Beds with poor edge support make it more difficult to utilize the full surface of the mattress without fear of tumbling out of bed.
The AS3 Hybrid has some pretty impressive edge support. Wrapping around the coils, the reinforced all-foam frame held up well to pressure, providing extra support. When lying right on the edge I did not feel as if I would topple out of bed. Overall, we think the AS3 Hybrid is a pretty good mattress for couples.
Amerisleep AS3 Memory Foam Vs Hybrid Mattress
The Amerisleep lineup includes the following memory foam models: AS1, AS2, AS3, AS4, and AS5. While each mattress is designed for a specific audience, the AS3 memory foam mattress provides the best balance of comfort and support. Suitable for just about all sleep positions, the AS3 is Amerisleep’s most popular purchase.
The AS2, AS3, and AS5 are all available as hybrid options. Like the AS3 memory foam mattress, the AS3 Hybrid is a versatile mattress, likely to please a large audience. As such, the AS3 is also the most popular hybrid mattress purchase.
Having reviewed Amerisleep’s AS3 memory foam model last year I was expecting the AS3 Hybrid to have a medium to medium-firm surface feel. I was surprised to find that the hybrid was quite a bit softer than the all memory foam model. However, both mattresses are a good fit for a wide range of sleepers.
Like the all-foam model, the AS3 Hybrid is a good choice for side, back, and combination sleepers. Ultimately, however, I did feel that both models might be a touch too soft for stomach sleepers. If this is your preferred sleep position I would recommend the AS1 memory foam mattress or the AS2 in either the memory foam or hybrid option.

Choosing a Mattress Foundation
Selecting the right mattress foundation is crucial to the health and performance of your new mattress. Platforms and slatted bed frames are both good options when it comes to your new foundation. However, if choosing a slatted frame, ensure that the slats are no more than 3” apart otherwise, you may experience premature dipping and sagging.
Adjustable bases are also an increasingly popular option! With an adjustable base, you can sit upright, elevate your feet, or enjoy the benefits of zero-gravity. Some adjustable bases include massage features, under-bed lighting, and USB ports. Whatever you opt for, choosing a sturdy foundation should be your top priority.

Sleep Trial
Every Amerisleep bed comes with a 100-night, risk-free trial period which begins the moment you receive your new mattress. Like many beds in a box, Amerisleep asks you to try the bed for 30 days before deciding if the mattress is for you. It can take some time to adjust to a new bed as your body and spine realign, especially if your old mattress had any dips or sags. However, after 30 days, if you are still not satisfied with your purchase you can initiate an exchange or return. Just make sure to do so before your 100 nights are up.
Warranty
Amerisleep mattresses come with a 20-year warranty. During the first 10-years, Amerisleep will replace your mattress free of charge if you encounter any defects, including sagging that exceeds 0.75”. After your first 10 years and up to year 20, Amerisleep will offer a pro-rated replacement.
Shipping & Returns
Shipping and returns are free in the continental US. Your new bed in a box mattress will arrive via FedEx in eco-friendly packaging. Amerisleep’s website says to expect to receive your new mattress in a week or less, though due to COVID this may take longer.
If initiating a return, Amerisleep will also help to schedule a pickup to recycle the returned mattress.
