Airpedic has consistently impressed us with its innovative design, customizable comfort, and commitment to quality. Proudly made in the USA, Airpedic mattresses stand out for their exceptional construction and advanced technology. When we got the opportunity to review the Airpedic 850, we were eager to see if it met the high standards set by its predecessors.

In our hands-on Airpedic 850 review, we explore its adjustable firmness capabilities, advanced technology, and standout features like edge support and motion isolation, helping you determine if it’s the right mattress for you.

Mattress Construction

  • Mattress Cover: Kool-Flow bamboo cover
  • Comfort Layer: This 6″ comfort layer is comprised of 3 unique layers:
    • 2″ Hypergel Infusion Cooling Foam
    • 2″ Gel-infused memory foam
    • 2″ Resiliflex Firm Support Foam
  • Foundation: Adjustable air chambers
    • Air Chambers: The chambers are 6″ of 100% medical-grade urethane, naturally resistant to mildew and mold, with RF heat-welded seams. Unlike other popular adjustable air bed brands, Airpedic uses a 6-zone multi-chamber air system, allowing for greater comfort customization.
  • Remote Control: 2 digital remotes for individualized comfort.

Firmness & Feel

Airpedic mattresses features adjustable air chambers, allowing you to customize the firmness to your preference using the remote control. This means the mattress doesn’t have a set firmness level but offers a range from medium-soft to medium, depending on the air chamber settings.

When I first crawled into the Airpedic 850, I was immediately met with a plush, contouring feel that provided instant cushioning for achy joints and pressure points. Despite the thick layers of foam, I didn’t experience the sluggishness often associated with such construction. Changing sleep positions was relatively easy, thanks to the responsive design.

The mattress offers balanced support across all settings, but the firmness you choose will significantly influence your experience. The mattress feels more medium on the highest firmness setting, providing solid support. Dialing it down to the lowest setting gives a medium-soft feel, ideal for those who prefer a softer sleeping surface.

Overall, the adjustable firmness of the 850 makes it a versatile choice suitable for all sleep positions. However, stomach sleepers and those who prefer a firmer feel may find the Airpedic 500 or 600 more to their liking, as these models offer a firmer surface feel.

Airpedic 850 Mattress Performance

Cooling

For hot sleepers like us, a mattress that stays cool is essential. The Airpedic 850 features advanced cooling technology designed to keep you comfortable throughout the night.

The 850 employs gel-infused foams and Airpedic’s unique Airflow Transfer System to achieve superior cooling. The gel-infused foams help regulate temperature by absorbing and dissipating body heat. Additionally, the Airflow Transfer System enhances airflow throughout the mattress. This system includes pinholes in the top two layers of foam and channels in the third layer, allowing for optimal airflow and efficient heat dissipation.

Edge Support

The Airpedic mattresses demonstrated exceptional edge support, thanks to the use of reinforced perimeter foam. This thick, firm layer encases the air chambers, ensuring robust edge support across all models. While we were impressed with the edge support on every Airpedic mattress, we did notice that models with thinner comfort layers provided slightly sturdier edge support. However, even the plushest models performed better than most mattresses we’ve reviewed.

Additionally, Airpedic incorporates a foam bar down the middle of the mattress, between the air chambers. This design feature prevents couples from rolling into the center of the mattress, a common issue with other adjustable air brands. Combined with Airpedic’s dual adjustability, this makes the Airpedic 850 an excellent choice for couples!

Motion Isolation

Another important factor for couples is motion isolation. Couples sharing a bed don’t want to be disturbed whenever their partner gets in or out of bed. Thankfully, the Airpedic 850 excels in this area. The thick foam layers provide excellent motion isolation, significantly reducing the transfer of movement across the mattress. This means you can enjoy a restful night’s sleep without being disturbed by your partner’s movements.

Ease of Movement

Ease of movement is crucial for combination sleepers. If you’ve ever felt trapped in your mattress, struggling to change positions, you understand the importance of this performance factor. While memory foam is often associated with poor ease of movement, the Airpedic 850 addresses this issue with its 2-inch layer of Resiliflex Firm Support Foam. This responsive foam layer combats sluggishness, allowing for effortless position changes.

However, the firmness setting you choose will affect performance. The firmer your number setting, the better the ease of movement. On softer number settings, sleepers may experience some sluggishness. Despite this, the Airpedic 850 remains an excellent choice for combination sleepers!

Airpedic Technology

Pump System

  • Overview: The Airpedic mattresses have an advanced air pump system that controls the adjustable air chambers.
  • Features: The pump operates quietly and efficiently, ensuring minimal disruption during adjustments. It’s designed to inflate or deflate the air chambers quickly to reach your desired firmness level.
  • Ease of Use: The pump is user-friendly, requiring minimal setup and maintenance. It integrates seamlessly with the remote control for hassle-free operation.

Remote Control

  • Design: The remote control features a sleek, modern design with a clear display and easy-to-press buttons.
  • Functions: The remote allows you to independently adjust the firmness of each section of the bed (head, midsection, and foot). You can easily increase or decrease the firmness by pressing the up or down buttons.
  • Our Experience: While the design is intuitive, the remote can be finicky. For example, if you try to adjust one of the chambers (e.g., the head) and then switch to another section (e.g., the midsection) before the pump has completed inflating or deflating for the previous setting, the change won’t take effect. Although the number on the remote will register the new setting, you won’t have actually adjusted the firmness. This can lead to confusion and may require a learning curve to ensure settings are properly applied.
  • Tips for Use: It’s best to wait until the pump has finished adjusting the current section before moving on to the next. This ensures that each adjustment is fully realized.

Airpedic Purchase Details

  • Sleep Trial: The Airpedic 850 comes with a 120-night sleep trial, allowing you to test the mattress in the comfort of your home. If you’re not completely satisfied, you can return it within this period for a full refund.
  • Warranty: A 20-year Limited warranty backs the Airpedic 850.
  • Shipping & Delivery: The Airpedic 850 is shipped via full size freight, it is not compressed, and rolled.
