Airpedic has consistently impressed with its innovative design and customizable comfort. The Airpedic 500 is no exception, standing out as the firmest model in the lineup.

This review explores the 500’s unique features, including its advanced air chamber system, superior edge support, and cooling technology. We also share our firsthand experience with its firmness, ease of movement, and motion isolation, helping you determine if this mattress is the right fit for your sleep needs.

Mattress Construction

The Airpedic 500 features a meticulously designed construction aimed at providing a firm and supportive sleep surface. Here’s a closer look at its components:

  • Mattress Height: 10 inches
  • Comfort Layer: Comprised of 1 inch of Hypergel Infusion Foam, which is plush and promotes a cooler sleeping experience, and 2 inches of Resiliflex Foam, offering firm, durable support.
  • Air Chambers: Adjustable 6-chamber air system made from 100% medical-grade urethane with RF heat-welded seams, naturally resistant to mildew and mold.
  • Foam Encasement: High-density 80 lb foam encasement providing exceptional edge support.
  • Mattress Cover: Kool-Flow bamboo cover that enhances breathability and comfort.
Adjustability: Dual adjustability for customized firmness through the head, lumbar, and legs.

Firmness & Feel of the Airpedic 500 Mattress

The 500 stands out in the Airpedic lineup for its notably firm feel. Its adjustable air chambers allow for a customizable firmness range, controlled via remote settings. This includes the ability to adjust the firmness independently for the head, lumbar, and legs, providing a tailored sleep experience.

Standing at a height of 10 inches and with a 3-inch comfort layer, the Airpedic 500 delivers a firm, responsive feel. From the moment I laid on it, I was immediately impressed with its robust support. While firm, the comfort layers provided a gentle cushioning effect, preventing excessive sinkage and ensuring comfort.

Overall, the Airpedic 500 is best suited for back and stomach sleepers or anyone who prefers a firmer feel. It excelled in maintaining spinal alignment during back sleeping and provided the necessary support to prevent my hips from sinking while sleeping on my stomach.

While the Airpedic 500 can accommodate most sleep positions, if you’re a side sleeper or prefer a softer feel, check out the Air-Pedic 700 or Air-Pedic 1000. These models offer softer comfort layers that better cushion the shoulders and hips.

Our Airpedic 500 Sleep Experience

The Airpedic 500 employs advanced cooling technologies, including gel-infused foams and Air-Pedic’s innovative Airflow Transfer System, to ensure a cooler sleeping experience. The gel-infused foams help regulate temperature by absorbing and dissipating body heat. The Airflow Transfer System further enhances cooling by incorporating pinholes in the top two foam layers and channels in the third layer, facilitating optimal airflow and efficient heat dissipation.

A unique advantage of the Airpedic 500 is its thinner comfort layers, which contribute to a cooler sleep environment. Unlike mattresses with thicker foam layers that can trap heat, the 500’s design minimizes contouring and sinkage, promoting better airflow around your body and reducing heat retention.

Temperature Testing Disclaimer: Our typical procedure for testing mattress temperatures involves a controlled home environment to accurately measure heat retention and dissipation. However, for the Airpedic 500, our testing occurred in a warehouse with varying temperatures. Although we recorded temperature readings, the warehouse conditions may have influenced the results.

Edge Support

While all the Airpedic models demonstrate exceptional edge support, the Airpedic 500 offers the best edge support in the lineup. This is largely due to its thinner comfort layers, which allow for less compression, and the use of a high-density 80 lb foam encasement.

This robust foam encasement surrounds the adjustable air chambers, creating a firm perimeter that prevents sagging and maintains the mattress’s structural integrity. Whether you’re sitting or sleeping near the edge, the Airpedic 500 provides a stable and secure feel.

This feature is particularly beneficial for couples and seniors. Couples can use the full width of the mattress without feeling like they might roll off. At the same time, seniors will appreciate the added stability when getting in and out of bed, reducing the risk of falls.

Overall, the reinforced edge support ensures a stable and supportive sleep environment, contributing to the mattress’s long-lasting performance and comfort.

Motion Isolation

While the Airpedic 500 has fewer comfort layers than other models in the lineup, it still excels at isolating motion.

When getting into and out of bed or changing positions, Mike and I remained undisturbed by each other’s movements. This makes the Airpedic 500 an excellent choice for couples who value uninterrupted sleep.

Ease of Movement

The Airpedic 500 offers excellent ease of movement due to its thinner comfort layers and firm feel.

We found it easy to move around and switch positions on this mattress, which is a strong indicator that it will work very well for combination sleepers. The responsive design ensures smooth transitions between different sleeping positions, helping to maintain uninterrupted sleep.

Pump System and Remote Control

The Airpedic 500 features an advanced air pump system that efficiently controls the adjustable air chambers. This system operates quietly, ensuring minimal disruption during adjustments, and quickly inflates or deflates the air chambers to reach your desired firmness level. The pump is designed to be user-friendly, requiring minimal setup and maintenance, and integrates seamlessly with the remote control.

The remote control boasts a sleek, modern design with a clear display, allowing you to independently adjust the firmness of each section of the bed (head, midsection, and foot), giving you precise control over your sleep surface. You can easily increase or decrease the firmness by pressing the up or down buttons.

While the remote is intuitive, it can be a bit finicky. For example, I tried to adjust one of the chambers, such as the head. I then quickly switched to another section, like the midsection, before the pump had completed its adjustment. I found that the change didn’t take effect. Although the number on the remote would register the new setting, the firmness didn’t adjust. This led to some confusion initially, and it took me a while to understand why I wasn’t noticing a difference in firmness.

Tips for Use: To avoid this issue, I found it best to wait until the pump has finished adjusting the current section before moving on to the next. This ensures that each adjustment is fully realized, allowing you to achieve the perfect firmness for each section of the mattress.

Overall, the pump system and remote control of the Airpedic 500 offer a high level of customization and convenience, enhancing the overall sleep experience by allowing precise adjustments to meet individual comfort preferences.
